Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Planned Rally at Jean Ping’s Headquarters April 25, 2017

The U.S. Embassy in Libreville has learned that a political rally is scheduled to take place on August 25 at Jean Ping’s Headquarters.  There are increased police checkpoints throughout the city, including one going northbound at Lycee d’Etat that is pulling over many motorists.   This may result in blocked roads and transportation disruptions.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including at local events, and monitor local media for updates.  Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
