Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Gabonese Election

The U.S. Embassy in Libreville informs U.S. citizens that demonstrations have been reported in Libreville in the area of Cite de la Democratie-Voie Express-Boulevard Triomphal, which police have attempted to disperse with tear gas. Further protests and demonstrations are possible throughout Gabon following the announcement of the results of the Gabonese presidential election.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Roads may be blocked and transportation, including commercial air travel, could be disrupted in the event of violent protests.  Mobile and fixed line telecommunications could also be disrupted.  Avoid unnecessary travel and remain at or close to home until security conditions have stabilized.
