The United States recognized Gabon on August 17, 1960, in a congratulatory message from President Dwight D. Eisenhower to Prime Minister Leon M’ba. On that date, Gabon’s independence from French Equatorial Africa was proclaimed.

Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, 1960. Diplomatic relations were established on August 17, 1960, when Alan W. Lukens (resident at Brazaville) presented his credentials as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim.

Establishment of the American Embassy in Gabon, 1961. Embassy Libreville was established on March 20, 1961, with Walker A. Diamanti as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim.
